ไอโอเอสมีต้นกำเนิดมาจากแมคโอเอสเท็นซึ่งได้รากฐานมาจากดาร์วินและแอปพลิเคชันเฟรมเวริค์ต่างๆ ไอโอเอสคือรุ่นพกพาของแมคโอเอสเท็นที่ใช้บนคอมพิวเตอร์ของแอปเปิล
รุ่นหลักของไอโอเอสจะมีการเปิดตัวทุกๆ ปี ในปัจจุบันได้มีการปล่อยตัวไอโอเอส 7 ซึ่งเป็นรุ่นล่าสุดในวันที่ 18 กันยายน ปี 2013
