สโมสรฟุตบอลจังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี ก่อตั้งเมื่อวันที่ 23 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2541 เคยสร้างผลงานยิ่งใหญ่ เป็นแชมป์โปรวินเชียลลีก 2 สมัย ในปี พ.ศ. 2545 และ 2547 โดยมี สัญลักษณ์เป็นรูปยุทธหัตถีหน้าดวงตะวันส่องแสง สีประจำทีมคือ สีส้มและสีน้ำเงิน มีนายเกรียง นักพาณิชย์ เป็นผู้จัดการทีม และอาจารย์ชนะ ยอดปรางค์ เป็นผู้ฝึกสอน มีจำนวนนักกีฬาทั้งสิ้น 30 คน และเจ้าหน้าที่ทีม 10 คน โดยได้รับฉายานามในขณะนั้นว่า ทีมขุนแผน สุพรรณบุรี ส่วนฉายานามในปัจจุบันคือ ช้างศึกยุทธหัตถี เป็นทีมที่สร้างนักกีฬาฝีเท้าดีมากมาย เข้าสู่ตลาดไทยลีก หรือแม้แต่ทีมชาติ นักเตะที่โด่งดังจากทีมจังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี เช่น ประเสริฐ ช้างมูล เทิดศักดิ์ ใจมั่น มานิตย์ น้อยเวช เบคเค่นบาวน์ เสืออินทร์ คำภีร์ ปิ่นฑะกูล ฯลฯ
ในช่วงที่กำลังจะเริ่มต้นฤดูกาลใหม่ 2554 นายบรรหาร ศิลปอาชา นายกรัฐมนตรีคนที่ 21 ของประเทศไทย ได้ตอบรับเทียบเชิญจาก นายกบุญชู จันทร์สุวรรณ เข้ามาทำทีมด้วยตนเองในตำแหน่งประธานที่ปรึกษาของสโมสร และมอบหมายให้บุตรชาย "ท็อป" ส.ส. วราวุธ ศิลปอาชา เข้ามาเป็นประธานสโมสรฟุตบอลสุพรรณบุรีเอฟซี โดยมี นายกบุญชู จันทร์สุวรรณ นายก อบจ.สุพรรณบุรี เป็นประธานสโมสรกิตติมศักดิ์ และใช้สนามกีฬากลางจังหวัดสุพรรณบุรีเป็นสนามเหย้า แทนสนามเดิมคือโรงเรียนกีฬาจังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี
ด้วยความพร้อมในการทำทีมอย่างจริงจัง ประกอบกับวิสัยทัศน์ที่ต้องการสร้างทีมฟุตบอลอาชีพ โดยมีเป้าหมายเพื่อผลักดันทีมให้ขึ้นสู่ไทยพรีเมียร์ลีกให้ได้ภายใน 2 ปี ของ วราวุธ ศิลปอาชา มีการทุ่มเททั้งกำลังคนและงบประมาณอย่างเต็มที่ เพื่อทวงความยิ่งใหญ่ในการเป็นสโมสรฟุตบอลที่มีผลงานอยู่ในระดับแนวหน้าของประเทศ ซึ่งถือเป็นอีกหนึ่งของความภาคภูมิใจของชาวสุพรรณบุรี กลับคืนมา
